Shining a light on distracted driving through personalized coaching.
Prior to implementing Samsara AI Dash Cams, Kreilkamp saw an uptick in distracted driving-related safety incidents, but had no way to coach on the behaviors involved in those incidents. With Samsara AI-powered notifications, drivers are empowered to improve on their own safety after they pick up their phone or engage in other distracted driving behaviors.
Leveraging Samsara’s Proactive Driver Coaching, including In-Cab Nudges™ and alerts, Kreilkamp can prevent distracted driving in real time.
“We don’t have to sit and watch hours of driver footage,” said Amanda Haack, Retention Manager. “We just get an alert in our Samsara Dashboard when an incident occurs, and the AI Dash Cam will automatically trigger an in-cab reminder and we can share a coaching workflow for when the driver is done with their route.”
When the team first started tracking distracted driving, they received multiple in-cab audio alerts on these behaviors every day. After leveraging Samsara coaching workflows, distracted driving alerts decreased to almost zero.
The Kreilkamp Retention team also recently created the Distracted Driving Prevention Program, a retention-focused initiative that leverages Samsara Safety Scores and other data to create safe driving incentives. Fewer incidents on the road means less downtime, and Kreilkamp reports increased driver satisfaction as a result. To encourage driver buy-in, Kreilkamp leans on top drivers like Kurt Roth to demonstrate the benefits of safe driving and share his knowledge with others.
“Kurt has maintained a 98/100 Samsara Safety Score compared to our company average of 79,” said Haack. “He quickly adapted to the Samsara system and constantly shares his tips and tricks for driving safely with fellow drivers. Drivers like him help everyone understand how to take their safety into their own hands.”
A simpler solution for reducing paperwork—at drivers’ fingertips.
Prior to partnering with Samsara, documents like bills and customer receipts were housed on disparate systems and could take hours to upload and process. Now, drivers can quickly upload all their daily documents through the Samsara Driver App and even earn paperwork incentives on top of their pay.
“Some drivers wouldn’t even attempt to send in their paperwork with our old system,” said Haack. “It’s so easy for them now, and it saves everybody time.”
Samsara eDVIRs are also saving the business time and money. In the past, Kreilkamp’s DVIR documentation system caused delays in information and limited their visibility into the state of their assets, making vehicle maintenance reactive. After utilizing eDVIRs for just one year, Kreilkamp reduced driver time spent on repairs on the road by 50% and roadside assistance hours by 25%.
Looking to prioritize driver feedback, Kreilkamp created a custom satisfaction and feedback survey that drivers can access 24/7 using the Documents feature in the Driver App.
“I have drivers write in with ideas they have about retention that they’re hearing out on the road or ideas for incentives and programs that they’d like to see,” said Haack. “We’ve even implemented some of their ideas already.”
Turning insights into incentives to reduce idling time.
When Kreilkamp examined their Samsara Driver Efficiency reports, they realized that idling time was costing the company money and contributing to unnecessary emissions. Building on the success of their paperwork and safety incentives, they decided to create an idling incentive program for drivers.
“Before Samsara, our drivers didn’t realize how much it costs when a truck idles,” said Haack. “Now they can see their idling time and the estimated cost of that idling anytime in the Driver App, and that motivates everyone.”
With idling data at everyone’s fingertips, drivers and coaching staff can take a proactive approach to cutting idling and emissions. The result for the business is significant; every idling hour reduced is money saved, and Kreilkamp will continue to leverage Driver Efficiency reports to reduce emissions and costs.
