AWP safety reduces speeding, seat belt violations, and mobile phone usage by over 70% with Samsara
The leading provider of traffic control solutions also improves coaching timeliness by 38% and coaching effectiveness by 75% with Samsara coaching workflows.
Meet AWP Safety
AWP Safety needed to centralize their telematics and safety technology.
AWP Safety is the leading traffic control company in North America and provides planning, work zone set up, flagging, and technology solutions, among a variety of other traffic-related products and services. Founded in 1981, the company serves utility, broadband, municipal, contractor, and special events customers in 28 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces.
A large and growing company, AWP Safety was using multiple GPS platforms across different business divisions to track and measure safety performance, an approach that wasn't giving them the visibility they needed. “Our decentralized systems collected crucial data that allowed us to make strategic decisions locally and within specific functions," said Jarrod Wachter, Chief Operating Officer. "But the inconsistency of how the data was gathered made it tough to synthesize it across the enterprise to gain high-level insights.”
In addition, AWP Safety was in need of a platform that could monitor driver behavior to increase employee accountability and reduce the company's liability related to risky driver behaviors. "We wanted to be able to reward our top drivers for demonstrating desired behaviors and identify opportunities for additional driver training," said Mark Ludewig, Vice President of Safety.
To address these concerns, AWP began their search for a solution that could be implemented across their operations to give them insights into driver behavior and vehicle and asset location, as well as coaching tools to take the company's overall safety performance to the next level.
Samsara provides an all-in-one solution to deliver better visibility.
When he joined AWP, Ludewig was already familiar with Samsara and believed it was an ideal solution for the company. "Our previous telematics solutions didn't have the robust capabilities we saw in Samsara," he said. "Samsara's full range of solutions and insights aligned with two things: our desire to elevate behavior awareness and driver training, and our goal to implement technology that enhances the overall safety of every community we work in."
In addition to a robust feature set, Wachter appreciated the fact that Samsara was a comprehensive platform. "Samsara stood out because it's an all-in-one solution," he said. "Centralizing our data with a single source of truth has helped us standardize our metrics and identify patterns across our footprint. We have high confidence in the data's integrity, and regularly use it to communicate with our teams about our safety performance."
Behavior alerts empower drivers to self-coach.
In-Cab Nudges™ have been a key part of AWP’s success. "When a harsh event occurs, we use In-Cab Nudges to give drivers the opportunity to self-correct. If they do, then it doesn't register as a harsh event," said Ludewig. If the behavior continues, it kicks off a coaching workflow that notifies a manager. "Our policy is to coach all behaviors within 72 hours, but our average response time is about seven hours. The coaching features have been a game-changer for us." The company’s focus on safety and more effective coaching have also helped lower driver turnover by 51%.
AI Dash Cams and Coaching Workflows reduce risky driving behaviors.
With Video-Based Safety, AWP has been able to significantly lower a range of risky driving behaviors. These include reducing harsh events by 75%, speeding by 74%, seat belt usage violations by 73%, and mobile phone usage by 81%. "There's a sense of pride around the organization around how we're improving safety," said Wachter.
The AWP team points to Coaching Workflows as a key element of their success. "With Samsara, we've raised the bar for coaching," said Ludewig, citing a 38% improvement in coaching timelines and a 75% increase in coaching effectiveness. "We drive positive behaviors with recognition and rewards, and address undesired behaviors immediately with more training, rather than being punitive."
LEARN HOWTelematics provide critical data for AWP’s driver qualification tool.
In addition to sustainability, AWP has used Samsara to support their proprietary Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) tool, an internal driver qualification solution that the company uses to track driver records and performance. "Previously, we didn't have an enterprise solution that provided insights and a clear view of all driver behavior," said Ludewig. "Now we learn quickly about driver improvement opportunities in Samsara and proactively address them before an incident occurs."
Proactive tracking helps save fuel and lower emissions.
Sustainability is a top priority for AWP, and Samsara has played a key role in helping the company use less fuel and lower emissions. By using Samsara Vehicle Telematics to proactively track idling and fuel usage, AWP saved 133,466 gallons of fuel and reduced their total carbon footprint by 1,186 metric tons in 2023.
LEARN HOWBetter asset tracking enables AWP to improve customer service.
AWP has more than 3,000 assets across their operations, and being able to find them quickly has enabled them to not only be more efficient, but also deliver better customer service. "We now have the ability to identify and distribute our assets more strategically across cities or states as our customers' needs flex throughout the year," said Ludewig.
One comprehensive view allows AWP to quickly locate assets.
For AWP, being able to quickly locate assets across widely dispersed sites is critical. Using Samsara, the company can quickly see the location of all of their equipment with one dashboard. Moreover, AWP has been able to improve asset utilization and avoid investing in unnecessary equipment.
LEARN HOWSamsara’s flexibility sets the stage for future integrations.
AWP will expand the use of APIs across their operations, developing a scorecard that includes more KPIs to report on additional critical areas of the business. "We are integrating data from Samsara, Intelex, our Environmental, Health and Safety software, and Fleet Response, our fleet management tool, to optimize our operational view," said Wachter. "Samsara's flexibility makes it a core part of our data strategy as we strive to transform the traffic safety industry through technology."
Samsara APIs power seamless data sharing and reporting.
The AWP Safety Analytics Team uses Samsara APIs to integrate safety data with Tableau, giving senior management across business divisions easy access to real-time KPIs. AWP uses the integrated Tableau dashboard to discover opportunities for safety improvements, as well as identify recipients for their rewards and recognition programs.
